At a time and place in which matrimony is considered a woman's logical goal in life, Lalita displays a cautious reluctance toward marriage so when the wealthy Darcy expresses an interest in courting her, she isn't so sure she cares for him. One of the least likely matrimonial prospects is Willam Darcy (Martin Henderson), a rich, handsome, but cynical American, who accompanies friend Balraj (Naveen Andrews) to Amritsar to help him chose a bride. The younger daughters Lakhi (Piya Rai Choudhari) and Maya (Meghnaa) complete the quartet of the sister act. Bakshi (Nadira Babbar), with the begrudging assistance of her husband (Anupam Kher), begins seeking out suitable (and suitably wealthy) husbands for her four daughters: Lalita (Aishwarya Rai), Jaya (Namrata Shirodkar). The elegant comedy gets under way when socially gauche Mrs. Don't look for Elizabeth Bennet in Lalita Bakshi and don't look for noble or higher meaning in Chadha's adaptation of Austen. Don't know if Austen would approve of this bowdlerized version of her novel of manners. And hey, whaddya know? It's the time to balle balle to the movies.
